A Photoelectric Smoke Detector is a highly effective device designed to detect slow, smoldering fires that produce a lot of smoke but little heat or flame. It works by using a light source and a sensor within a chamber. When smoke enters the chamber, it scatters the light, causing a portion of it to hit the sensor and trigger the alarm. This technology is less prone to false alarms from cooking fumes or steam, making it an excellent choice for bedrooms, hallways, and near kitchens.

Photoelectric detectors use a light source (usually LED) and a sensor in a chamber. When smoke enters, it scatters the light so some of it strikes the sensor, triggering the alarm. These detectors respond more quickly to smoldering fires (e.g. long‑burning upholstery fires, smouldering wires) than some other types. They are less prone to false alarms caused by cooking smoke or steam. Commonly compliant with fire safety standards (e.g. EN54, UL), with both mains powered and battery backup versions.
