An Ionization Smoke Detector is engineered for the rapid detection of fast-flaming fires that produce a small amount of smoke but a significant amount of heat and flame. It contains two electrically charged plates with a small amount of radioactive material in between. This creates a tiny, steady electrical current. When smoke particles enter the chamber, they disrupt this current, which in turn activates the alarm. This type of detector is often recommended for areas with a higher risk of flammable liquids or materials that can ignite quickly.

Ionization detectors include a small radioactive source (often Americium‑241) between two charged plates that ionize air molecules, creating a current. When smoke enters, it disrupts the ion flow between the plates, reducing the current and triggering the alarm. This type responds more quickly to fast flaming fires with small, invisible particles, but may be more sensitive to false alarms from small particulates, cooking aerosols, or steam.
